What is K-CAPPIC?

In 2006, the Japanese Ministry of Health called for university proposals as part of their Education Reform Initiative. Of 55 proposals, Kanazawa Universityfs was one of eleven projects selected for implementation (these pilots are funded for two years but will become permanent if judged successful). Our program is called CAPPIC : Center for the Advancement of Pregnancy, Perinatal and Infant Care. Japanfs rural areas suffer a shortage of physicians, particularly obstetricians, gynecologists and pediatricians. CAPPIC seeks to redress this problem.

The program encompasses both in-center and out-of-center training. In-center training utilizes Problem Based Learning (PBL) in a special seminar to establish the fundamentals of Ob/Gyn/Peds for KU medical students. From this seminar, a select group of students will be assigned to an out-of-center triple rotation that includes training at a large city hospital, a rural hospital, and a foreign hospital. The goal of the rotational training is to assimilate classroom-studies with real world praxis, introduce the rural health care environment, and improve studentsf ability to think and act independently. A secondary goal of the overseas rotation is English language competency; while not necessary for Japanese rural healthcare in and of itself, English is considered an important piece of the physician toolbox, as well as a gsweetenerh that makes the program more attractive to prospective candidates. (CAPPIC is interested in creating links with interested universities and NGOs; please contact us if you would like to participate in our student exchange program.) Ultimately, our hope is that CAPPIC will see more students choosing Ob/Gyn and Peds as their specialty and serving rural communities with these skills.
